Blogging from National Volunteer Health Associaton Conference

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I presented today at the National Volunteer Health Assoication Conference on User Generated Content so I didn’t have a lot of time to post about it. However Elle Waters tweeted the whole thing so here is quick re-cap of the conference from her.

Aw, shucks!

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Well, our cancer data/disparities map mashup didn’t make it into the winner column at the NetSquared competition. But 21 other interesting projects did. Congratulations to them.
I’ll go pout now.

Your genetic profile on Facebook?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It’s rather stunning how the perspective on matters can change pretty quickly. Technology Review has an article about how 23andMe has an amazing take on genetic variation: it may be a new basis for common social  identity and, hence, social networking.
"I think the idea of social networking has untapped potential," says George Church,
a pioneer [...]

Genetic testing disconnect grows

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

I’ve written before about the rapid growth of genetic testing companies that will test for genetic indicators of everything from paternity to 3 billion base full genome dumps, all for a price. And I reported last week on the study published in JAMA that about how unprepared physicians are to deal with genetic testing.
The tribulation [...]

Talking User Generated Content at NVHA

Monday, March 24th, 2008

So I got invited to talk about User Generated Content at the National Volunteer Health Association next week. I am really excited to speak to them about what we are doing with User Generated Content and building community around it. From SharingHope.TV to our YouTube channel I think we have really embraced this social software [...]

SharingHope.TV shares patient stories

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

As many of you know we launched SharingHope.TV last week to the Tech Community at SXSW. While our site is geektastic I also wanted to remind everyone what the site is really about. Helping people tell their stories. Check out the decision making that blogger Susan Reynolds went through once she talked to her Doctor. [...]

Ready or not, here it comes

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I’ve posted a couple of comments in recent months on the rapidity with which genetic testing is coming to the consumer market (1, 2). The plummeting cost of gene sequencing is spurring entrepreneurs to offer various testing services online. It can run from testing a few well-known trouble spots to whole genome sequencing. Various health [...]

The competition is on!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

A week ago I posted about working with fellow FISpacer Patrick Shore to  frame a proposal for the NetSquared Mashup Challenge. The proposal was to get help from Google engineers to see what we could do to map data about cancer incidence and mortality along with SES indicators to see if we could get a [...]
