2.0 Attitude!

The values and attitudes inspired by the “Web 2.0″ movement of recent years are spilling into health information practices. Blogs, Wikipedia, YouTube and many other sites have supported a sense of empowerment that challenges the traditional authority of many professions. “User-generated” content and “participation” are core values of what I like to call “2.0 Attitude.” This is having a significant impact on emerging trends in health care and medicine. This video is about that.

Oh, by the way, could 2.0 Attitude also bring about the decline of traditional, professionalized non-profit organizations? Watch and find out.

The American Cancer Society at SXSW 2009

If you haven’t heard about SXSW let me let you in on a secret. It’s the best Learning experience you can have as a professional in the field of Web Development, Marketing, Filmmaking or as a Musican. Bar none. You can take TED and toss it out the window. You can attend Poptech with all your hipster friends and learn nothing. Or you can take a week and attend SXSW in 2009.

But here is where I need your help.

Social Change Behind the FireWall submitted by Holly Ross
Successful nonprofits using social media are masters of social change behind the firewall.   This panel shares best practices through stories from nonprofit institutions and examines  how to get past resistance, uncooperative IT departments, and skepticism from management to  reap the power of social media for social change beyond the firewall.  (PS - Jonathan Coleman, Beth Kanter and I will be on this panel and we’ll be wearing special costumes ..)

IGNORE: Hitting Your Social Quota submitted by Kristine Gloria
I’ve got 10×0x friends, and you’re not one of them. A discussion on why setting a social quota may not be a bad idea. Although this concept is highly understood, how can one manage the thousands of people on any given social network. The days of social media whores are numbered. Come see how to manage your digital landscape and why reject with comments should be the killer app.

Selling my House the Social Media Way - A Photo…

So I am soooo very close to putting my house up on the market.  Last week it was the painting and this week it’s one of the oldest forms of Social Media Online, putting your photos on Flickr. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words…..so enjoy. All the photo were take by Meredith Maples from Austin, TX. And the badge below is super easy to make. Some examples would be events your non-profit has. Instead of linking to a 100 photos one by one put them on Flickr and then create a badge of them. Or start a group and let people add their own photos from the event. All easy and free with Flickr.

Selling My House the Social Media Way - Part Eight

So right now my house is being painted. And you know how that happened? Not using the yellowpages for sure. Here’s the scoop on the Social Media aspect of painitng.  I know Michell Greer (@michellegreer) in fact I helped organize a tweet up blood drive with her (social media for social good and all that). However recently she told me “No more free stuff dude“, which although it saddens me I completly understand. She has bills to pay. However on the side she helps Burmese refugees.

So even though she pretends to be hardcore business lady she thought how can I help? So she asked if she could train the Burmese folks to paint my house. This way I pay a fair price, she helps people, and they learn a skill they can use here in Austin, TX.

So far social media is working people…..believe!

Can Social Media Sell my House? - Part Six

::Editor’s Note: This is part of my ongoing series of posts as I try and sell my house "The Social Media Way"::

So my house is now officially on a couple of Social Networks. Think of me a Social Media Scientist and this is my grand experiment. To help reach a conclusion to this experiment can you take some of the action items below and help me out?

Can you become a fan of my house on Facebook? I promise some sweet rewards for adding it.

Can you rate my space on HGTV? Their Beta looks sweet!

Can you rate my house on Zillow.com? Leave me a question and I will answer it.

So what other Social Networking sites am I missing?  I would add myspace but that’s dead anyway. Does my house need a twitter account?  Let me know in the comments below. And please do take action! My house’s music video is coming soon as well.

Set Up An Idea Budget

Idea_bulb
If you’re interested in futuring and innovation, then chances are, you come up with good ideas every so often. Sometimes you may have several good ideas in a short period of time and they suffer because you’re unable to allocate sufficeint time and other resources to them.

Over at Copyblogger, James Chartrand authored a post called, Battle Productivity Brain Drain With An Idea Budget. It could be as easy as creating a Word doc on your computer’s desktop. Or, if you’re a disciple of Getting Things Done, you would call it a Someday-Maybe list.

No matter what you call it, check out his post. Following his seven tips could be the difference between an idea lost and an idea that makes a difference.

Hey, that’s a good idea.

Social Media for Goverment 2008 - Recap

Just got back from Washington D.C. where I spoke at the Social Media for Government Conference. I have to say I was a bit worried when I saw all the speakers were from CIA, DOD, Homeland Security, etc. I thought that this would be an audience that would be behind the times for sure. But I was wrong….very wrong. Some examples:

The DOD uses Blogger Roundtables to pitch new ideas and give sneak peeks to Blogger
The CIA uses Wiki’s all over the place. (Video coming soon)
The DOD has a "New Media" Division to deal with everything from Generals Blogging to soldiers on Facebook (their Wikipedia Page was just flagged though)
The NOAA has an island in Second Life
The TSA has a rocking blog (and I met Blogger Bob, he’s the govt celebrity Blogger)

All excellent ways the US Govt is using Social Media for (dare I say it) Social Good. Well not always the good of people everywhere but I won’t get too political. I presented on the Frozen Pea Fund, User Generated Content and the Tweet Up Blood Drive as examples of spending zero money but getting a ton of good ROI. Hopefully I was a good presenter.

Check out photos of the event .

Check out Crowd sourcing vs. Experts here (I was one of the "experts" and I p0wned the crowd….okay not at all)

Social Media for Govt and Non-profits Conference

want to let you know that I will be speaking at the "SOCIAL MEDIA For GOVERNMENT: How To Engage Your
Employees And Citizens By Using Social Media," July 14 – 17, 2008, in
Washington, DC
.
My session topic will be “How To Spread Your Message
And Harness The Power Of Social Media While Being Cost-Effective.” Of course I didn’t want to call it that, but they made me. I wanted to call it "No Country for Old Media".

If you happen to be in D.C. and want to come check it out or to get more information about the event, see
the information below or go to the conference web site at http://www.aliconferences.com/conf/social_media_govt0708/index.htm.

I am just excited since I get to hopefully have beers with the Social Media folks from the CIA, NSA and the CDC on Tuesday night. Here’s hoping!
